Cloth Diaper Market – Impressive

December 24th, 2007

I recently started purchasing my natural family products from the Cloth Diaper Market located in Barrhaven, ON (South/West’ish end of Ottawa). This is a super convenient location for us since we always go by Barrhaven to get home from Ottawa. Being able to pick stuff up locally means NO shipping charges for us!!

I was impressed that Andrea (the owner) actually carries Allen’s Detergent which is the recommended laundry detergent for Fuzzi Bunz and other diapers. I went on a bit of a tour of her business and was impressed at the variety of different cloth diapers which includes the Canadian made Annie Marie Padorie (AMP) diapers which are very similar to the Fuzzi Bunz but maybe better (I am going to have to try these with our next babe). Baby Bits are also a bit cheaper here, too!

I found out about the Cloth Diaper Market while participating in the Breastfeeding Challenge in Ottawa, she very conveniently put a business card in the gift bags with a code for 10% off. Of course I like when I get a coupon. I have only ever received a coupon once before from a site I have ordered from. Very smart, Andrea!

So be sure to check it out by clicking on the links above!!

Ottawa Baby Boom Show!

December 2nd, 2007

So I decided to go see what the Ottawa Baby Boom Show was all about the weekend of September 8-9, 2007. There was some pretty big hype about it on Hott 899 (the radio station I listen to most of the time). I enlisted my friend Jenn as her 2 year old LOVES the Backyardigans and they were making an appearance at the show all weekend… meet and greet only nothing cooler. Anyways, we were walking around the show and came across the Similac/Abbott Labs booth since we had noticed some pretty neat looking bags were being given out from that booth. As avid extended breastfeeders we cautiously approached the booth to see if we could figure out how to get one. I asked the gentlemen, so whats the deal with the bag you are giving out? He says, well you have to fill out this form for a chance to win the carseat over their. Easy enough I thought… so off to filling out the form. You know for a chance to win a carseat they wanted to know a LOT.. like my kids age, if a breastfeed, how long I planned to breastfeed…ect. Of course I answered the “how long are you planning on breastfeeding question” with as long as possible crossing out the “months” option on the ballot. So, in the bag he was putting “FREE” cans of formula which of course I have no use for. I asked for some Pediasure instead since its something I would considered giving my babe later on. He said… sure and made me up a bag with some in it. Strangely enough I was somewhat pleased with the whole deal…. until I opened the bag at home and realized that he had also chucked in a can of formula. UGH! So now I get to add the can of formula to the other formula samples I got before I had my babe and hopefully find time to bring them to the foodbank. Strangely enough if I was a formula feeder I would totally pick Similac/Abbott Labs since there business is meal replacements ect unlike Nestle who makes chocolate syrup and violates every breastmilk alternative marketing practice.

I got some good info on Doula’s although the lady was kinda pushy so I certainly wouldn’t be choosing her for the birth of any of my children.

Overall, its a decent show to go to but New Momma’s beware the formula company and all there money are trying to suck you in. Breast is BEST(and cheapest)!!!

Walmart Photo Studio – An Experience

December 2nd, 2007

So, we decided to get some family pictures done to appease the extended family and heck I guess we should have a picture of the family on our wall somewhere. I made the appointment at the Barrhaven Walmart (3851 Strandherd Dr.) and got an appointment within a week, I was slightly picky due to my work and kid’s schedule. Anyways, it was booked for a Sunday and the night before I get a call as apparently the camera broke and they had to reschedule our appointment. So, I rebooked for a week later since weekday appointment are not good in our family.

Which brings me to today… which was Walmart picture day. Our day is of course stressful trying to get everyone ready… matching outfits, happy babe, happy parents, pretty hair and makeup….. BLA! We left in ok spirits and were optimistic about the pictures. We get there and the lady looks at me and says “OH, we are just running a little late…”, I wondered how late was “a little” since children don’t have unlimited good behavior time and I was starting to worry about how our little one would make out. So, we waited. Turns out that “a little late” was about 3 families/people behind. We finally get our turn behind the camera and holy heck was it a BIG RUSH!! The family shot went off fairly well and we got that one pretty quick.. maybe too quick. But regardless onto the babe, after placing the babe on the cute little white fur covered table the painful task of getting a picture began. The first was was great… full body, smile…cute! So we saved that one. Then the photographer wanted to try a close up… but of course the babe kept moving and wasn’t in the middle of screen (go figure its a baby). Anyways, we tried to get one more good one but oh was the rush on. The photographer actually said I can only do one more cause we are so busy today. Grone.

I just wanted to point out that maybe they should have called some of the people to let them know that they were running late and maybe to show up later hence eliminating the fact that there were zillions of people waiting in a small space with progressive getting crankier kids.

I also wanted to point out that just because the camera breaks and you don’t get it fixed for several days doesn’t mean that customer service should suffer. This rushed atmosphere isn’t the way to sell the service and have people come back. Yes, Christmas time is busy but this is when the game should be on.

So, I don’t think that we will be going back to Walmart for photos anytime soon. Yup, its cheap but I would rather pay a bit more and at least not feel rushed and overwhelmed when its supposed to be fun and exciting. From Walmart, I would expect better BUT maybe not cause it is Walmart afterall. For a family that is trying our hardest to be green, this is certainly not a good place to shop (but its a cheap one!).

huh.. maybe i’ll just write a complaint. That might get me further.

Perfect Pads – AWESOME!!

November 3rd, 2007

After talking with some of my eco-friendly friends I found out that there are cloth menstrual pads on the market and that they really aren’t that bad. After doing some research I settled on buying some “Perfect Pads” which I ordered from Jamtots since they are a Canadian retailer. I first ordered 6 Diva Day pads with the hemp core, I thought they were very comfortable and slim. Best of all they don’t smell like the disposable kinds. I thought to myself that I now know what my baby feels like while wearing a Fuzzi Bunz diaper, its pretty sweet having fleece near your private area!

After such great luck with the Diva Days I decided to buy some panty protectors for everyday use. I bought 9 and have been very satisfied. My only gripe is that they are a bit long for my liking at 9.5 inches but I have managed to figure out how to make them more comfortable by just adjusting where they sit once snapped on.

Here is what they look like in real life – these are the Pure Organic ones:

Here are the panty protectors:

Here is a comparison in size for the two:

So as you can see they come in some pretty funky colors which at first i thought was odd but they work so well it doesn’t matter what they look like anymore.

Now you are probably asking yourself about washing them… right? Well, its pretty simple I just put the used pad in a small bucket of water near the toilet and change the water everyday for about 3 days. Then I wash the dirty pads by chucking the water and all into the washer and washing on hot with a small amount of Allen’s Naturally Detergent. Once washed they are either hung up to dry or put in the dryer. So, you really don’t have to touch any nastiness.

Chalk this up to another eco-friendly feat for our household. No unnecessary disposable “convenience” items for us. I wish more people would open up their minds to small changes like cloth diapers and menstrual pads… the difference is amazing!!

Pocket Change Diapers – Just Awful!

November 3rd, 2007

Ok… I’ve had enough. DON’T BUY POCKET CHANGE DIAPERS!!! I’ve given them the benefits of the doubt, been nice and understanding but the quality of materials are completely awful.

Continuing on my saga…. I recieved my exchanged diapers back in August and barely used them and VOILA the green one has now lost its elastic in the back. So within 2 months of being barely used they are failing again. This is completely unacceptable. Here is a pic of the diaper…. its fleece is still nice and new and the front elastic is still plenty tight.

Failed elastic - pocket change diaper

They are cheap for a reason and the only thing I like about them is the hemp insert which had some issues at the beginning (took many washes to become absorbent). I have now purchased some medium Fuzzi Bunz to make up the slack in my diaper stash. I do plan on using the hemp inserts from my pocket change diapers as inserts for my new Fuzzi Bunz.

Here is one Disappointed Customer. Thanks Montana’s Diaper Store and The Natural Baby Company for nothing… you’re diapers are a waste of money.

Similac Advanced New “Free” Giftbag

September 29th, 2007

Those who know me know I am an avid breastfeeder (check out some of my other posts).. heck my babe has NEVER had even one drop of formula. I’ve certainly gone thru some breastfeeding ups and downs but never gave into the stuff. Anyways, formula marketing is ridiculous these days and here is an example of how one new’ish mother has been bombarded by the “free samples and stuff” given to new moms as a welcome to their new babes. Welcome my Butt.. seriously!

Anyways.. here is a pic of the current stash of free stuff that I have acquired over the last little bit.

Similac Advanced - Free Stuff

I got one can and a blue cooler bag (not pictured) before my babe was born. One green cooler bag and can of formula at the Baby Boom Show and then just this week I got ANOTHER green bag and 2 cans of formula (advanced and isomil) in the mail. Holy Moly!! So now I have 4 cans of Similac formula to give away or throw out. However, the cooler bag is great!!! Its the perfect size for a short outing and as you can see I have come up with a way to NOT advertise for them.. that’s right… the beautiful brown patch over the embroidered logo. Now I don’t feel so bad.

It all really makes me think about marketing and how new Mom’s are targeted in a time when they are most venerable. Smart marketing I guess but still just awful for the babe who deserves breastmilk not formula.

Of course its not only Similac that does all this…. Enfamil is just as bad although I only got a sample can from them…. no gifts. Nestle is however the worst violator of not following marketing requirements for infant food. See Baby Milk Action. If i HAD to use formula I would try to use Similac since its made by a company that pretty much only makes nutritional supplements… not stuff like chocolate syrup and bottles of water (aka Nestle).

Anyways… Thanks Abbott Labs/Similac for the nice bag!

What its like to participate in the Breastfeeding Challenge…

September 29th, 2007

As I mentioned in a previous post I participated in the 2007 Breastfeeding Challenge today at St. Laurent Center in Ottawa. I met up with my friend Jenn and we were ready for anything…. well for the most part.

Since we both had pre-registered online we got to go into a “special” line to get our numbers. I was lucky and got number 40 with no issues. My friend however had to stand in 2 lines before being told they couldn’t find her pre-registration and just to start anew. It was very frustrating as it could have been better organized.

Anyways, we find our seats and get set for the challenge. The question of course in our heads was… what the heck is going to happen? So out comes Sandra Plagakis from 105.3 Kiss FM to let us know that she has nursed 2 babes and introduce the real MC’s. She introduced Angie Poirier from A-Channel Ottawa and a french doctor (my apologizes to her for not catching her name). They go on about sponsors, the benefits of Breastfeeding and encourage people walking by to participate. You could just see all the young men who were out for a nice day at the mall realizing that they had potentially scored an opportunity to catch a glimpse of a boob. So she gives the warning.. 2 minutes until we start, then keeps talking. My babe was getting tired and antsy so I started nursing early… then all of a sudden the count down… 5,4,3,2,1… LATCH! The strangest thing of all was you were asked that once your babe had latched on to put your hand up to be counted.

Anyways.. Congrats to Ottawa who had 198 woman and babes breastfeeding all at once! 🙂

Ottawa City Counsellor Alex Cullen doesn’t Support our Troops?

August 28th, 2007

So it seems anyways… with his recent comments that are directed at the Ottawa City Police force for placing the simple yellow “Support our Troops” on their cruisers.

Check out this article and this one for more details.

We all support our troops, but that is not the debate,” he wrote. “Chief White has made it clear that these stickers show support not only for our troops, but for the mission in Afghanistan as well.

Here is my issue with this whole deal… First of all the “Support our Troops” decals, magnets and stickers are in support of our “Troops” around the world. That’s right around THE WORLD as apparently unbenounced to some people Canada’s troops aren’t just in Afghanistan (although it is obviously the most publicized mission at the moment). With this in mind it seems blatantly obvious that a Support our Troops sticker would then in fact also show support for our “troops” in Afghanistan… just troops though as it has NOTHING to do with the mission. Seems to me that Mr. Cullen has a personal issue with the new chief of the Ottawa Police and has decided to pick his bone with him by making a political issue out of something like whether or not Support our Troops stickers also mean support for the mission in Afghanistan. I think that Chief Vernon White placed these stickers on the cruisers in good faith, afterall police officers and our military personnel are like brothers. They all serve the people of this country and why wouldn’t you have one show support for the other.

Mr. Cullen has obviously missed the point and someone should certainly remind him of the great sacrifices that “OUR” troops have made over the years. As many of these sacrifices now allow us to enjoy the freedom and the privileges we have in our Country today.

Seriously Mr. Cullen wake up! Supporting our Troops isn’t about the mission in Afghanistan it’s about showing SUPPORT for the mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends who are members of our Canadian Military because they believe that they can make a difference thru serving our Country.
